What is self-confidence?
Self-confidence is not just one thing. It means different things to fldifferent people. Some define it as 'trust or firm belief in self', while some others equate it with 'boldness. But, these difinitions still do not provide convincing answers in the before-cited cases, like why did mike who had all the information and came well prepared, and also who was bold enough become nervous suddenly? What went wrong with him? Truly speaking, self-confidence is more than these definitions. How self-confidence rises or falls can be understood from the following.
Every situation puts certain demand s on per and each person has a capacity or capability to meet such demands. The capacity and capability of a person to meet a particular demand can be termed as 'coping skills' of a person, as shown in figure.
If the demand seem many and one's coping skills to meet the demands seem low, one will feel unconfident. Like, feeling "there's far too much to do and there's no way I can cope up with it " leads to fall in one's confidence level.
Like wish, if one's coping skills match the demands, one enjoys being confident. And if one coping skills are much higher as compared to the demands on him one feels over-confident.
From the above the following three thing become evident:
1 self-confidence is a dynamic state of mind and not a static one.
2 self-confidence can vary in both the direction.
3 self-confidence is the result or outcome of two variables, I.e., one's coping skill and the demand s made on an individual.
